This piece is rooted in that very specific feeling that I was inspired by from not just the chaos of service, but the pause right after it. That space is never peaceful. It’s where everything catches up: pressure, doubt, grief, expectation. It isn’t loud in those moments—it’s internal, holding it all in. This portrait mirrors that exact state. The lighting is the key. It’s not dramatic in a loud way—it’s controlled, almost suffocating. Half of my own face is visible, half disappears. This isn’t about expression outward—it’s about what’s happening underneath. The eyes aren’t performing; they’re processing. So the “orders” represent everything external—expectations, roles, what people demand of you. And the “quiet” is that moment when none of that is being spoken… but it’s all still there, sitting heavy. It’s not rest. It’s not relief. It’s the moment where you’re left alone with yourself. That is what inspires me in this piece. This feeling is what drives people in their day to day lives. Everyone is driven by either expectation or grief trying to keep stories going. Everyone wants to be known in a way. This is the quiet between orders. The pause in-between chaos.
